Nordic Skiing in Yellowstone National Park

I just came back from a "bucket list trip" at Yellowstone National Park, where I Nordic skied through the Blacktail Plateau, Lamar Valley, Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon, and the Gallatin Range. The Yellowstone Foundation/Institute program offers a limited number of people every year the opportunity to experience the amazing winter ecology of Yellowstone.

It exceeded all my expectations. It was a little bit chilly, at -8°F to 8°F temperatures and winds up to 30 miles an hour, but with the right gear, we were totally comfortable.  Nothing I have done on skis can compare to this amazing experience. There were only ten in the group, including a naturalist who provided amazing insight into the winter ecology. We saw amazing wildlife, plenty of snow, and unlimited geysers that just took my breath away.

Here I am at Angel Falls, a stunning paradise that is rarely visited in the winter. This program takes you into backwoods, mountain views, frozen waterfalls that are otherwise not available to the public.  Getting around in "snow cats" makes the trek fun.

Take a look at their site. Mammouth Lodge will be closed for the next 2 winters, so they can replace the very old and archaic heating system. Old Faithful Lodge will remain open. The program is called Yellowstone On Skis!
